Green Methanol: A Sustainable Liquid Fuel

Green methanol, also known as renewable methanol or e-methanol, is a liquid chemical compound produced using renewable energy sources and sustainable carbon. Unlike conventional methanol, which is typically derived from fossil fuels like natural gas or coal, green methanol offers a low-carbon alternative with significant environmental benefits.

How is Green Methanol Produced?

The production of green methanol involves a multi-step process that focuses on minimizing carbon emissions:

  • Carbon Capture: Carbon dioxide (COâ‚‚) is captured from industrial emissions or directly from the atmosphere. This captured COâ‚‚ is then reused in the methanol synthesis process, effectively closing the carbon loop.

  • Green Hydrogen Generation: Green hydrogen is produced through the electrolysis of water, powered by renewable electricity from sources such as wind or solar.

  • Methanol Synthesis: The captured COâ‚‚ and green hydrogen are combined in a catalytic reaction to produce methanol (CH₃OH). This process ensures that the resulting methanol is produced renewably and without polluting emissions.

The Role of Green Methanol

Green methanol is gaining recognition as a versatile and efficient alternative to fossil fuels, offering several key advantages for decarbonization:

  • Emissions Reduction: Green methanol can significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions, with some estimates suggesting a 60-95% reduction compared to conventional fuels. It also substantially reduces nitrogen oxide, sulfur oxide, and particulate matter emissions.​

  • Versatile Applications: Green methanol can be used in various sectors. It is a promising alternative fuel for transportation, particularly in maritime shipping, where decarbonization is a major challenge. It can also be blended with traditional gasoline or diesel, offering a smoother transition for existing vehicles. Furthermore, it serves as a valuable feedstock for producing other chemicals, plastics, and materials, reducing the chemical industry's reliance on fossil fuels.

  • Energy Security: By diversifying the energy mix and utilizing renewable sources, green methanol contributes to enhanced energy security.
